The permit technician processes all applications submitted for construction permits, route all plans submitted to the various departments for plan review, computes fees for construction permits (including plan review, development and impact fees). The permit technician also assists the general public with interpretations of adopted city codes and ordinances.
To obtain a building permit, you need to provide the following:

Two (2) complete sets of plans, minimum sheet size 24”x36”. The plans should include a site plan, foundation plan, floor plan, elevation plan, electrical plan, plumbing plan, and a framing and roof plan. Additional sets of plans may be required.

List the square footage of all livable area, garage, porch, covered patio and decks, separately.

A grading plan and permit may be required to control earthwork construction occurring on undeveloped property and /or other development and expansions not included on prior approved subdivision plats.

A permit from the Santa Cruz County Health Department, if a septic system is to be used, must be obtained before the building permit is issued.

A copy of the water service receipt form the water company providing service to the property.

An inquiry printout report from the Santa Cruz County Assessor’s Office verifying ownership of the property.

Additional information may be required at the time of application depending on the type of construction.
The building permit fee calculation is derived from Table 1 – A, Building Permit Fees, from the most recent Uniform Building Code. Other fees included are a plan review fee, sewer impact fee, electric meter fee, and Certificate of Occupancy fee. All fees are due and payable upon receipt of the building permit.
