The Interim City Attorney is Joe Machado, and the office employs a full time Assistant City Attorney and a contract prosecutor. The City Attorney is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the City Council.

The Law Department engages in a full range of municipal law services on behalf of all branches of the Nogales City Government.

Under the Nogales City Charter, the Law Department has charge of all legal business of the City.  This includes the preparation of ordinances, contracts, leases, Code updates and other legal documents.  The Office represents the City in litigation or manages litigation through outside counsel and is responsible for prosecuting Misdemeanors and other offenses which occur within the City Limits. The City Attorney provides legal services to all city departments, and serves as general legal counsel to the Nogales Housing Aurthority and other boards and commissions of the City. The City Attorney and the Law Department cannot provide legal services or give legal advice to individuals or entities that are not connected to the City of Nogales.
