Nogales, AZ – This week the City of Nogales began a re-paving project on a 1.5 mile stretch of Baffert Drive.  The project is part of the City’s Infrastructure Improvement Plan announced by Mayor Kramer in February of this year.

On Wednesday, Mayor Kramer along with Public Works Director Manuel Tapia visited the construction site.  “I am glad that the Public Works department is moving along with the City’s Infrastructure Plan.  The Baffert Drive improvement project is greatly needed as many people use this street to take their children to school and to go in and out of the Monte Carlo subdivision,” said Mayor Kramer.  He added, “I am happy to see that this street was made a priority by the Public Works department.  Many people have contacted my office to request that this street be improved and today I am satisfied to know that this will benefit many families of our community.”

The project will be completed in two phases.  Construction of the first phase started last Monday and was completed on Wednesday.  In this phase Baffert Drive was resurfaced from Calle Santa Ana east to Calle Rivas.

“We decided to complete the first phase this week, as local schools are on vacation and traffic is reduced greatly in this area,” Tapia said.  “We are using a Poly Chip process, which allowed us to finish construction before children return to school next week.  We were able to finish this phase quickly because the street’s condition in this area allowed us to make minor repairs before placing the material on top of the old asphalt.  This material will be good for the next five years.”

Construction of the second phase is scheduled to begin on October 23rd, and this phase goes from Calle Santa Ana West to the Nogales Wash.  “This area needs more time because we have to replace the old pavement completely as it has been heavily damaged.  This week we met with area business-owners to discuss the construction plan for this phase.  We decided to complete the work at night between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. to accommodate their business needs,” stated Tapia.

The completion date of the Baffert Drive project is projected for November 17, 2006 and it is estimated that the project will cost about $350,000.  The contractor in charge of completing the project is Sunland Pavement.
